9. 20 Years of No Shortcuts

Credit: @vivretheagency

Twenty years of doing the same thing right is a flex most restaurants can’t claim. Bad to the Bone BBQ has been slow-smoking 12 to 24 hours in all wood-burning pits since 2005. The result is real pit BBQ: USDA prime brisket with a bark that means business, Carolina pulled pork with that vinegar-kissed finish and baby back ribs that barely need a napkin. The 2- to 4-meat combo plates are a commitment, in the best possible way. They have a 1,700-square-foot private banquet room, full-service catering for weddings and corporate events and a happy hour that runs Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the bar and patio. South OC’s best-kept BBQ secret just decided to stop keeping quiet.

Rosewood Social sits on the rooftop of the historic Franciscan Plaza with panoramic views of the downtown, the Mission and the rolling hills beyond. Wagyu dumplings, bang bang shrimp and a sea bass that regulars claim is the best in California share space with well-crafted cocktails and a rooftop happy hour that draws a crowd. Sunset on this patio is an event in itself.
