For many, the idea of parenthood sounds wonderful, but now might not be the best time. For those who would like to increase their chances of having children when they’re older, Orange County’s RISE Fertility recommends considering egg freezing—a procedure that allows you to take control of your reproductive future.

Egg freezing and fertility preservation at RISE Fertility begins with an individualized IVF (in vitro fertilization) protocol and carefully monitored ovarian stimulation to maximize the number of eggs that can be retrieved. The egg-retrieval process is a brief outpatient procedure performed under anesthesia. The expert embryologists evaluate the eggs and freeze them, and from there they can then be stored indefinitely.

Still curious? Here are five frequently asked questions about egg freezing that RISE Fertility can answer.

Why consider egg freezing?

Freezing your eggs is a fantastic option for those who want to grow their family—just not right now. And the beauty of this concept is that the narrative can look different for everyone, whether you’re someone facing medical challenges, transitioning or simply aren’t looking to get pregnant now. In an interview with Allure, actor Jennifer Aniston shared, “I would’ve given anything if someone had said to me, ‘Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.’” Egg freezing allows you to plan your family later in your life, offering you greater reproductive control in a world that’s going through huge changes.

Will I need IVF in the future if I freeze my eggs now?

Although every body is different, freezing your eggs does show promise for reducing your need for IVF in the future. IVF is a procedure where an egg is fertilized in vitro, or in a scientific environment like a test tube or culture medium in a lab. IVF is sometimes seen as someone’s last resort for conceiving a child. Fortunately, egg freezing and fertility preservation can help some avoid this process altogether. Proactive fertility preservation is also less timely and costly than IVF

Is egg freezing a good option for cancer patients?

Yes, egg freezing and fertility preservation increase your chances of conceiving after going through cancer treatment. In fact, it increases these chances exponentially! When you preserve reproductive material, you’re opening up to possible fertility treatments that may have otherwise not been possible before, including ones that can help you conceive even after undergoing fertility-compromising procedures, such as cancer treatment. According to the National Cancer Institute, “Chemotherapy (especially alkylating agents) can affect the ovaries, causing them to stop releasing eggs and estrogen.” This effect is sometimes temporary, but it’s best to be proactive if possible. Keep in mind that other conditions like endometriosis will play a factor in your fertility, but RISE Fertility is here to help regardless of where you are in your journey.

Will freezing eggs preserve their quality?

Yes, that’s actually one of the most important benefits of preserving eggs as soon as possible. When you freeze your eggs earlier in life, you are preserving eggs of a higher quality for when you are older and ready to grow your family. As we’ve mentioned before, this is especially important for those who will be undergoing fertility-compromising procedures and treatments as well as women who are near or past 40 years of age. In women or those assigned female at birth, fertility begins to decline in their 30s, so it’s best to be proactive and preserve your highest-quality eggs when you can.

Will freezing my eggs affect my fertility in the future?

No, fertility preservation and egg freezing will not have a negative effect on future fertility. This is a common fear, and fortunately, RISE Fertility is here to lay that misconception to rest. As mentioned above, by preserving higher-quality eggs, fertility preservation improves your chances of conception in the future.
