Dry January in LA Made Me Love the City More

Dry January, LA-style: Culture, Movement and Zero-proof Nights That Still Feel Like a Vibe and Loved It

Let’s be honest for a second: “Dry January” used to sound like a cruel and unusual punishment. It would conjure images of staying home on Saturday nights, drinking lukewarm tap water and doom-scrolling while you contemplated whether “wellness” was worth it. But this is Los Angeles in 2026, and we don’t just do wellness here. We turn it into a full-blown lifestyle experience that makes everyone else want to pack up and move to California.

The city has officially pivoted, and the “sober-curious” movement has graduated from a niche trend to a cultural phenomenon. Michelin-starred restaurants offer juice pairings that rival their wine lists and kava bars stay open until 1 a.m. with crowds buzzing on natural, plant-based energy. Whether you’re doing a hard reset for the New Year,  cutting back after December aged you five years in one month or are sober-curious, this list has you covered. Here are 19 spots and experiences that’ll keep your calendar full, your mind clear and your Instagram feed absolutely fire throughout January.

Point Dume State Beach

The Vibe: La Vida Más Fina (The Finest Life)
Location: Malibu

Credit: Kim Davies

Let me start you off with what I consider the quintessential Los Angeles moment. It’s what makes you remember why you moved here, or why you put up with traffic and rising rent prices. You don’t need some dimly lit bar with sticky floors and a surly bartender to unwind after a long week. What you need is salt air filling your lungs, a horizon line that stretches out forever, and the Pacific Ocean putting on its nightly show. Head up to Point Dume in Malibu (yes, it’s a bit of a drive, but trust me) and pack yourself a sunset picnic. Include a good blanket, some cheese and crackers, whatever makes you happy and settle on the cliffside while the light is still golden. Pop open a cold Corona NA beer, and add a fresh wedge of lime (this is not optional). Then, watch surfers catch the last perfect waves as the sun melts into the Pacific in those impossible shades of pink and orange and purple that only happen in SoCal. Sitting with the ocean breeze on your face and that crisp, cold beer in your hand, you won’t be missing a single thing. In fact, you might realize you’re experiencing this moment more fully than you ever have before.

Free Spirited

The Vibe: Low-lit, leather booth glamour
Location: Alhambra

If you’re craving nightlife energy without alcohol, Free Spirited delivers. Zero-proof cocktails arrive with beautiful presentations, ranging from creamy and sweet sips to spicy pours that bring the heat. Fun fact: they have an ABC menu featuring 26 mocktails, each named after a letter in the alphabet. Try the Very Magical Cat: roasted grain spirit with vanilla, passionfruit, rosewater and magic color cordial that changes the beverage’s hue! Their scratch-kitchen menu features Filipino dishes and entrees for folks with dietary and allergy restrictions (gluten-free bread, anyone?) Conversation flows easily, and no one feels like they’re missing out. Sober nightlife in Los Angeles finally has a proper home. You can keep up with their event calendar on Instagram. Past highlights include comedy shows, drag dinners, karaoke, French language practice and mahjong nights.

The Sober Show @ UCB Theatre

The Vibe: Comedy Without the Hangover
Location: Franklin Village

Dry January Los Angeles
Credit: Daryl Jim Diaz or @daryljimphotography

On February 14th, the legendary Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre hosts what might be the most cathartic comedy show you’ll ever attend. A cast of entirely sober improvisers will take audience stories about drunken mishaps and turn them into absolute comedy gold. You get to share your most embarrassing, regrettable, “why did I think that was a good idea” drunk stories, and then watch professional comedians transform them into sketches that will have you laughing until your face hurts. It’s therapeutic in the best possible way! You’re processing all those cringe-worthy moments from your drinking days while being surrounded by people who totally get it, and somehow the whole experience ends up feeling celebratory rather than shameful. The energy in the room is electric because everyone’s sharp, present and genuinely connecting. You’ll leave feeling lighter. Plus, there’s no two-drink minimum, which means you can actually afford to go to comedy shows more than once a year now.

Kavahana

The Vibe: The Late-Night Social Finally Exists
Location: Santa Monica

Finally, a place that answers the question, “Where can I go at 10 p.m. on a Friday night that isn’t a bar?” Kavahana is LA’s first Kava Nectar bar, and it feels like a trendy Santa Monica lounge. But, instead of tequila shots making everyone louder and sloppier, they serve Kava, a root-based drink from the South Pacific that gives you this natural, buzz-like relaxation. The space is warm and inviting, with a crowd that wants to be there and isn’t using alcohol as social lubricant. Plus, the vibe stays good all night because nobody’s getting drunk and messy. Start with a single shell of the Kava Nectar on tap if it’s your first time. It has this earthy, slightly spicy flavor that takes a minute to get used to, but then this calm wave washes over you, and suddenly you’re chatting with strangers like they’re old friends. The best part? You can stay until closing, drive yourself home feeling perfectly fine, and wake up tomorrow morning ready to get things done. There’s no risk of lying in bed regretting every life choice you made.

Kato

The Vibe: Michelin-Starred Artistry
Location: Arts District

If you want to feel genuinely fancy and remind yourself that not drinking doesn’t mean choosing a lesser experience, book a table at Kato. Their non-alcoholic beverage flight is so legendary in the food world that sommeliers from actual wine bars come here to study it. Bar manager Austin Hennelly has created this extraordinary pairing program that uses fermentation, preservation and fresh juices to create beverages that rival any wine list in the city. We’re talking bitter melons and cucumbers mixed with carbonated white peony tea that tastes like the most sophisticated gin and tonic you’ve ever had. There are clarified produce juices that change colors in the glass, and flavor combinations so complex you’ll find yourself pausing between courses to fully process what you’re tasting. The non-alcoholic flight is designed to pair with their tasting menu, and experiencing them together feels like watching a perfectly choreographed dance. Each beverage elevates the meal, the food makes you appreciate the beverage more and you walk out knowing you experienced something special. It’s the perfect place for a date where you want to impress someone, or a celebration to mark the occasion with something more meaningful than champagne.

Daybreaker LA

The Vibe: 9 a.m. Rave (Yes, Really)
Location: TBD (Secret Location Announced Before Event)

On January 24th, Daybreaker returns with their “Wet with Endorphins” party. If you’ve never experienced a morning dance party, prepare to have your entire concept of fun completely reconstructed. Imagine waking up, doing a gentle yoga session as the sun comes up, and then (without any transition or warning) the DJ drops a massive beat! Suddenly, you’re in the middle of a full-blown rave at 9 a.m., completely sober, surrounded by hundreds of people dancing like nobody’s watching. The energy is absolutely infectious in a way that alcohol-fueled parties never quite achieve. The music hits different when your senses aren’t dulled, and there’s something primal and joyful about dancing in the morning with strangers who made the same slightly unhinged decision to start their day this way. You’ll work up a legitimate sweat and make friends with people you’ll probably never see again but will remember forever. By 11 a.m., you’re walking out into the sunshine feeling like you just unlocked a cheat code for happiness. The rest of your day stretches out ahead of you full of possibility. Everyone you know is still asleep nursing hangovers, and you’ve already had the best time of your week.

Providence

The Vibe: Seafood Luxury
Location: Hollywood

Credit: Daniel Collopy

Don’t let the white tablecloths and hushed, elegant atmosphere intimidate you. Three-michelin starred Providence is welcoming to everyone, including non-drinkers. Their “Zero-Proof” seasonal pairing menu is designed to stand up to their world-class seafood with the same sophistication that goes into their wine program. Bar director Kim Stodel and Wine Director David Osenbach make mocktails that are so creative and complex you’ll take photos before even tasting them. Expect thoughtful combinations like herb-forward sodas, alcohol-removed Riesling and tea-based blends matched course by course. What makes the experience truly special is how seriously they take these beverages. They’re not afterthoughts or simplified versions of cocktails, but rather carefully crafted companions that enhance each course. The servers present them with the same reverence as they would a rare vintage, explaining the ingredients and flavor profiles. This is when you realize you’re getting the full Providence experience without any compromises. It’s a bucket-list dining experience where the “no alcohol” part becomes invisible because everything else is so extraordinarily good.

Death & Co

The Vibe: Moody & Mixology-Forward
Location: Arts District

Dry January Los Angeles
Credit: Death & Co

Yes, it’s one of the most famous cocktail bars on earth, known for drinks so elaborate they involve fire and spray bottles and ingredients you’ve never heard of. But their zero-proof menu proves that their bartenders can work just as much magic without any alcohol. The space is dimly lit with leather booths and vintage details that feel like you’ve stepped into a 1920s speakeasy. Their staff treats non-alcoholic orders with exactly the same respect and creativity as they do their famous cocktails. Order the Hullabaloo, made with Seedlip Notas de Agave, Wilderton Earthen, guava, coconut water, ginger, lemon and tonic. The bartenders are artists who view the challenge of creating compelling alcohol-free drinks as an opportunity to showcase their skills in new ways. Sitting at the bar watching them work is genuinely entertaining. You get all the ambiance, craftsmanship and “special night out” vibes of visiting one of LA’s most celebrated bars and leave clearheaded but fully satisfied. It’s proof that the Death & Co experience was never really about the alcohol.

Smorgasburg LA

The Vibe: The Sunday Ritual
Location: ROW DTLA

Credit: Smorgasburg LA

Returning on January 11th, Smorgasburg is an easy win for non-drinkers because the food is so tasty that nobody thinks about drinking. With dozens of vendors serving everything from fusion tacos to lobster rolls to experimental desserts, you’ll be too busy eating to notice that you’re not holding a beer. The market sprawls across ROW DTLA with live music, sunshine and that lazy Sunday energy where everyone’s dressed casually, moving slowly and just enjoying being outside. You can grab a spot at one of the communal tables, spread out your haul of different dishes and spend hours people-watching and tasting your way through vendors. The craft soda and agua fresca vendors are as creative and ambitious as any craft cocktail bar. Fresh horchata with cinnamon and rice, hibiscus agua fresca with lime and chia seeds and artisanal, small-batch ginger beer pair perfectly with all that rich, indulgent food. It’s one of those experiences that feels quintessentially LA because the focus is on discovery and experience rather than getting buzzed. By the end, you’ll have a full stomach, great photos and plans to come back next week to try all the dishes you missed.

VOLO Sports LA

The Vibe: Play Hard, Stay Sharp
Location: Multiple Locations Across LA (Westside, Central LA, Eastside, Valley, South Bay)

Dry January Los Angeles
Credit: VOLO Sports

Here’s something nobody tells you about drinking culture: it’s intimately tied to how adults socialize and meet people. So, when you stop drinking, your social opportunities can suddenly feel limited. Enter VOLO Sports LA (formerly ZogSports). They’ve solved this problem by organizing social sports leagues across the city focused on connection, play and community rather than bar-hopping afterward. Sign up for kickball in Echo Park, beach volleyball in Santa Monica, cornhole Downtown, or any of their dozen other offerings. When you sign up, you’re immediately plugged into a team of strangers who become friends through the shared experience of attempting athletics (with varying degrees of success and seriousness). Everyone’s focused on the game, the competition, the ridiculous plays, epic fails and building genuine friendships. Post-game, teams often grab food together at nearby spots, but the emphasis stays on conversation and connection. After weeks of games, playoffs roll around, and you care deeply about whether your team of accountants and graphic designers can beat those overachievers from the law firm. Crack open a Corona Non-Alcoholic after your victory! It’s got that same crisp, refreshing taste as the classic but with less than 0.5% ABV, so you can have a celebratory beer without losing the clarity and energy that made you play so well.

Apotheke

The Vibe: The Speakeasy Cure
Location: Chinatown

Dry January Los Angeles
Credit: Max Milla

This “pharmacy” themed bar takes wellness so seriously that its entire concept revolves around drinks designed to make you feel better. It’s a refreshingly honest approach in a city full of places claiming to offer “healthy cocktails” that still leave you hungover. Their “Wellness Tonics” section features drinks made with adaptogens, fresh herbs, and ingredients like turmeric, ginger, and ashwagandha that are designed to boost mood, increase energy, or promote relaxation depending on what you need. The space itself is gorgeous. There’s dim lighting, apothecary-style shelving lined with mysterious bottles, plush seating that makes you want to settle and staff who can explain the properties of different botanicals without being preachy. Order The Anti-Anxiety if it’s available on the seasonal menu, and you get this complex, sophisticated drink that actually makes you feel calmer and more centered as you sip it. It’s almost too good to be true until you remember plants have been doing this work for thousands of years before anyone thought to add alcohol. You’re not missing out on the bar experience either; you’re getting a superior version of it.

Thunderbolt

The Vibe: Neighborhood Tech-Soul
Location: Echo Park

Credit: @shelbymoore.co

Thunderbolt is famous among cocktail nerds for using high-tech methods like centrifuges and rotary evaporators to make their drinks. Thankfully, their bartenders apply that same obsessive energy to their zero-proof list, resulting in some of the most interesting non-alcoholic cocktails in the city. The Lychee Daiquiri nails what most non-alcoholic cocktails miss: texture. A touch of vegetable glycerine adds the silky mouthfeel of a classic cocktail, encouraging slower sips and a more intentional drinking experience. The space has this great neighborhood vibe where locals come to hang out at the bar, chat with bartenders who remember their orders and enjoy Southern-style food after a long day. The fried chicken thighs are legendary, the cheesy grits will make you question every other cheesy grit you’ve ever had and somehow eating your meal without alcohol feels more appropriate. You can actually taste all the layers and seasoning without your palate being dulled. The bartenders are just as excited to make you something from their zero-proof menu, and other customers are ordering them too because they’re that good.

The Tangerine Room at The Garland

The Vibe: Poolside Retro
Location: North Hollywood

Credit: The Garland

Every Monday in January, The Tangerine Room goes completely “Dry” with live acoustic music, a special menu of Lyre’s mocktails and this wonderfully low-stakes vibe. It’s the perfect way to ease into your week without any pressure or pretension. This private dining room of The Front Yard has gorgeous mid-century modern aesthetic. Think palm trees, vintage furniture, string lights and a sparkling pool that catches the evening light. The Lyre’s mocktails are impressive because Lyre’s has spent years perfecting spirit-free alternatives that actually taste like their alcoholic counterparts. Their “whiskey” has that warming, oaky quality and their “gin” captures those bright botanical notes. So, you’re not drinking something that tastes vaguely fruity and disappointing. The acoustic performers keep the energy chill and conversation-friendly. People bring blankets to lounge poolside. And the whole evening feels like you’re at a friend’s really nice house party rather than a venue trying to be cool. It’s the perfect low-stakes Monday date night that leaves you feeling refreshed, not depleted. On Tuesday, you’ll wake up feeling fantastic that you went out and had fun while everyone else was at home watching TV.

Merois

The Vibe: Rooftop Glamour
Location: West Hollywood (Pendry Hotel)

Credit: Merois

For views, glamour and that “LA rooftop” experience, head to Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant atop The Sun Rose West Hollywood. Here, the city stretches out in all directions, and the mocktails are crafted with the same attention and artistry as their famous cocktails. The space is stunning. There’s sophisticated outdoor seating, fire pits for when the evening gets cool, golden light that makes everyone look gorgeous and a crowd that’s dressed up and celebrating life. The mocktail menu changes seasonally but consistently delivers drinks that look expensive (because they are) and taste like something you’d brag about to friends. Expect complex layers of flavor and beautiful garnishes served in glassware. You won’t feel out of place holding one of these, and honestly, nobody will know it’s non-alcoholic. Come at sunset, watch the city transform and feel like you’re living in a movie montage. At the end of the night, you can walk to your car feeling great instead of worrying about whether you’re okay to drive.

Gracias Madre

The Vibe: Plant-Based Paradise
Location: West Hollywood

If you haven’t been to Gracias Madre, you’re missing out on some of the most creative, satisfying vegan Mexican food in the city. And if you haven’t tried their zero/low-proof mocktails, you’re missing out on drinks that rival any mezcaleria’s cocktail program in complexity and flavor. This plant-based Mexican restaurant on Melrose has cultivated a scene. The patio is always buzzing with beautiful people, the interior is decorated with vibrant colors and Mexican textiles and somehow the energy stays high and festive. Order the Peach Ritual, which brings together Green Apple NOOT, white peach purée, lemon, agave and soda water. The result is light and refreshing, making it the best bubbly replacement you could imagine. Their Norista is also legendary, made with Cut Above spirit-free tequila or mezcal, lime, agave and orange oil (no pre-made mixes here!) This pairs beautifully with the mushroom chicharrón tacos or the cashew queso fundido. The experience proves you can have incredible food, a lively atmosphere, creative beverages and walk out feeling energized rather than heavy and sleepy. This is where LA’s wellness-focused, aesthetically-conscious crowd comes to celebrate, and you’ll leave feeling inspired, not hungover.

LA for the Culture Hiking Club

The Vibe: Community in Nature
Location: Elysian Park

On January 10, join this free community hike at Elysian Park. LA for the Culture organizes these hikes specifically to create space for community and connection in a setting that naturally doesn’t involve alcohol. Everyone’s focused on the trail, the conversation, the views and the shared accomplishment of making it to the top. There’s something beautifully equalizing about hiking where everyone’s out of breath, nobody looks perfect and the experience strips away all the social posturing that happens at bars and parties. You have real conversations with strangers who become friends because you’ve literally gone on a journey together. The group is intentionally diverse and welcoming. Organizers create a vibe that’s encouraging, and there’s usually a hangout after where people grab coffee or snacks and continue conversations started on the trail. Pack a cooler with some Corona Non-Alcoholic to crack open at the summit. There’s something satisfying about a crisp, refreshing drink with less than 0.5% ABV after the hike, especially when you’re soaking in panoramic LA views that turn the moment into a celebration. You get exercise, community, fresh air, incredible views of the city and zero pressure to drink or be anyone other than yourself. Bring water, wear hiking shoes (not cute sneakers), show up with an open mind and prepare to find your new monthly tradition.

Melrose Umbrella Co.

The Vibe: Post-Prohibition Class
Location: Fairfax District

This spot has been championing the NA movement for years, back before it was trendy to be sober-curious. Walking in feels like discovering a hidden gem that’s been quietly perfecting its craft while everyone else was catching up. The year-round mocktail menu is seriously impressive. We’re talking drinks with housemade syrups, fresh herbs, unusual bitters and presentations that rival most craft cocktail bars. The space is incredibly charming with a working fireplace that makes January evenings feel cozy and romantic. There is vintage-inspired decor that doesn’t feel overdone, and a vibe that’s welcoming whether you’re on a first date or catching up with friends. Order a Pa-no-ma, ritual zero-proof tequila, prickly pear, green apple reduction, ruby red grapefruit, fresh lime and soda. The complex, balanced flavors will change your understanding of what’s possible without alcohol. The bar staff is friendly and knowledgeable without being pretentious. They’re happy to make recommendations and talk you through ingredients. It’s the kind of spot where you could become a regular, they remember your name and order and choosing not to drink never feels like you’re missing out. Plus, it’s on Melrose, so you can make a whole evening of it with shopping, dinner and (non-alcoholic!) drinks.

The Butcher’s Daughter

The Vibe: Plant-Based Aesthetic
Location: Venice & West Hollywood

You know it, you love it, you’ve definitely taken photos for Instagram, but have you actually explored their “Wellness Lattes” beyond using them as pretty props? The Butcher’s Daughter is that rare spot that’s both genuinely good and extremely photogenic. Their food is inventive plant-based fare that even meat-eaters crave, and the beverage program goes way beyond basic cold-pressed juices. Order a flight of their juices with rotating combinations like apple-celery-spinach or watermelon-fennel-honeydew-lime-lavender. And you can pretend you’re doing an expensive juice cleanse while enjoying delicious drinks that happen to be incredibly good for you. Their wellness lattes made with kamana, raw honey and superfood powders hit that sweet spot between indulgent treat and health optimization. The Venice location has a beachy, bright, white-and-plants aesthetic that makes you want to linger, while the West Hollywood spot attracts a post-workout, green-juice crowd. Either way, you’re surrounded by beautiful people making beautiful choices, and even ordering the pizza (which can be made vegan and actually great) feels healthy and virtuous. Come for Sunday brunch, order too many things, split them with friends and leave feeling proud of this treat-yourself moment.

Wi Spa

The Vibe: The Ultimate Detox
Location: Koreatown

Okay, it’s not a bar, and that’s exactly the point. Wi Spa is open 24 hours a day, offering an alternative approach to how you spend your late nights and early mornings that has nothing to do with drinking and everything to do with feeling incredible. This Korean spa is massive, sprawling across multiple floors. There are different temperature saunas, clay saunas, jade rooms, ice saunas, hot tubs, cold plunges, and sleeping areas where people curl up in matching orange uniforms for power naps. Swap the late-night bender for a scrub (the full-body exfoliation where someone removes several layers of your dead skin is intense but wildly satisfying). Or cycle through the various saunas, sweating out every toxin you’ve accumulated. You can alternate between the hot tubs and cold plunge until your circulation is singing, and then crash in the sleeping room for some of the deepest rest you’ve ever experienced. You’ll wake up feeling reborn with skin glowing and a clear, calm mind. Meanwhile, everyone who went out drinking is nursing headaches and checking their bank accounts with regret. It costs less than a night at the bar, you can stay as long as you want, and the 24-hour access means you can easily build it into your routine. Early morning soak before work? Late-night wind-down after a long day? Sunday afternoon spa date? All equally valid and equally transformative. Plus, the attached restaurant serves incredible Korean food that tastes amazing when you’re relaxed and starving from all that heat therapy. Eating spicy tofu in your orange uniform next to strangers feels like the most normal, perfect thing in the world.
