Imagine a cottage a few blocks from the beach with a charming, English-inspired garden abound with fruit trees, herbs and wildflowers, all enclosed by a white-picket fence. Sounds idyllic, right? Home to owners of Isles Interiors, Maria, an interior designer and Max Isles, a woodworker and furniture designer, their mutual love of design enabled them to open their interior design studio and store. Their signature style, a mix of simple-meets-organic with a touch of the unexpected, flows throughout their Laguna Beach home and onto their backyard where they like to entertain. They apply the same rules for entertaining indoors as outdoors, which makes their backyard a perfect spot for gathering with friends and family. Maria gave us a few tips on how to bring the inside out.

Inside Out: “Bring furniture from the inside of the house to the outside. The outside should be an extension of your home, think of it as a beautiful room of the house with lots of greenery and flowers as the backdrop. For the summer I bring out my wicker chairs for extra seating and coziness!”

#Vibes: “Lighting and music help the ambiance. We love to entertain outside, and nothing sets the atmosphere more than string lights and fun or relaxing music.”

Get Cozy: “In the summer, it’s fun to decorate the outside with pillows and rugs to make a relaxed atmosphere. If they aren’t weatherproof, just make sure to bring them in at the end of the night!”

Keep It Classy: “Always use your nice dinnerware outside. My biggest pet peeve is paper plates, plastic cups and plastic cutlery! Not only is it an environmental disaster, but using your beautiful dishes (even if they are just plain white) will give an outside party a touch of elegance and charm.”

Ready to Mingle: “If you have the space, try to create intimate nooks and crannies for guests to have different areas to mingle.”
